“Hai Hai, Kazuma-desu.”
This is my first journey through the “100 Days of Anime” Challenge, an ambitious project that I’ll be taking. For the full list of prompts, click here.
“Favorite goofy anime character?”
It’s difficult to describe Kazuma with many words. Being the only sane man in a party that includes a masochist, and chuunibyou and a useless goddess can’t be easy. Still, I’m in love with the entire party dynamic with Kazuma playing as a witty straight-man amidst all their crazy antics. Though he’s an otaku shut-in from another world I’d imagine him as more as a stand-up comic. His well timed quips towards Aqua, and his mean-spirited teasing to Megumin always end with a satisfying (and often crazy) reaction.
Though Konosuba aims to be comedic, with Kazuma breaking most of the “isekai” tropes you’d normally see, it never feels forced. His ventures into another world quickly show that not everything he’s learned from his games apply to this world. This causes him to have a more serious and pragmatic side, realistically thinking through their financial problems and quest difficulty.
When he’s not doing equally absurd things of course.
Yes, the party wouldn’t be the same without Kazuma; in that same respect, Kazuma wouldn’t be the same without his party. It’s that beautiful balancing act between setting up the punchline and finishing it that makes this comedic group hilariously fun to watch.
